In many African societies, the head or “ori” is your consciousness, essence, destiny. It is an individual marker of personal identity, a physical identifier and it ties us to family, extended families, community and ancestors.

The head is believed to have a significant role in guiding one’s life when it is “opened”. To the Yoruba in southwestern Nigeria, the head is a container for wisdom and the seat of divine power. It is divided into two parts: the external head, which is an identifier of individuality and the interior or spiritual head which is the life source that controls the outer head.

The people of Benin believe that the human head is imbued with spiritual energy that guides the individual throughout her lifetime. This happens when we trust our intuition, follow hunches and act on the insistent, inner nudges that seem to magically arise in thought. Doing so helps us to trust our instincts.
